The New Year rolled in about two weeks ago and everyone is back in the grind, chasing their dreams, goals and aspirations, strategizing and re-strategizing for the year. One thing I have learnt from my short experience at life is that you are the author and writer of your own success story and you can determine your own outcome.
You want to succeed in the New Year, but how do you intend to attain success? Maybe I should start by asking what success means to you. I know you already understand that success is not about wealth. There are loads of wealthy people who are unsuccessful in other areas of their lives. For me, being balanced in every area of life; without neglecting any part is huge success. Business/Career, Family, Spiritual, Wellness, Relationships, Self/Personal, Financial etc etc. working all in harmony; without any area suffering.
Have you heard of extremely wealthy individuals with mega destructive habits and behavioural patterns that either truncated their careers, their lives or destroyed their most valued relationships? This doesn’t sound to me like success.
There are several success tools, but one pathway for sure, and one mostly put on the back burner is interpersonal relationship. Being able to create and sustain healthy relationships is a huge channel to success. It is not sufficient to be “attractive”. Building and sustaining healthy relationships require that you are a person of character. It requires that you value other people and treat them with respect, that you are trustworthy, that you are caring and fair, that you are responsible, reliable and honest, that you have integrity and are not selfish; and the list goes on.
Life is about relationships. Plan to treat people with utmost respect this year. Compliment generously. Sincerity and genuineness is key. Be trustworthy, fulfill your promises and use your magic words willingly – “Please, Thank you, Excuse me, I am sorry, you are welcome, Pardon me etc.
Finally, do not forget the golden rule this year. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Making other people feel special says a lot about you. Remember birthdays and anniversaries; write thank you notes and go all out to be the best version of yourself this year.
Success takes persistence and effort, but it is achievable much more easily when you deliberately build and sustain healthy relationships with your positive character.
